Numeracy and Financial Literacy Summer Institute (12 February 2010)

The Math Forum invites teachers of 6th-12th grade mathematics to apply for its Numeracy and Financial Literacy Summer Institute. The institute is part of The Math Forum Enhanced Tools for Financial Literacy, a new comprehensive program that aims to support mathematics teachers as they integrate financial education concepts in the math classroom.

Come collaborate with other mathematics teachers, financial literacy experts, and mathematics education experts:

• using problem solving to integrate financial literacy into the mathematics classroom
• the math relevant to financial literacy and how it aligns to the core mathematics curriculum
• the interconnectedness between mathematical thinking and financial behavior
• organizing financial literacy resources into a catalog structure useful to mathematics teachers
• building and sustaining an online community that supports financial literacy and mathematics education
• supporting and encouraging participants' long-term engagement in The Math Forum Enhanced Tools for Financial Literacy

Stipends and other forms of support will be available for those who stay involved in the program after the institute, including facilitation of workshops built around an outline created at the institute, online forum facilitation, action research, and materials development.

The institute will be held July 27 through August 1, 2010, at the Inn at Penn, near the Drexel University campus in Philadelphia, PA. All travel/hosting/food expenses of participants will be covered.

T³ International Conference (12 February 2010)

TI also runs two-day Regional Conferences throughout the year. All T³ conferences are open to kindergarten to university educators interested in using educational technology to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts and world languages.

tPoWs Have Moved! (5 February 2010)

Technology Problems of the Week (tPoWs) are freely accessible problem-solving challenges modeled on our Problems of the Week that take advantage of interactive mathematics tools such as Java applets, TI-Nspire™, The Geometer's Sketchpad®, Fathom™, and spreadsheets.

We are moving the tPoWs from the old software system to a new one. You may use either system during this transitional period. The tPoWs are free, but require a login—if you have a login for the Problems of the Week or KenKen, you can use that, or sign up for a free login using the instructions on the site.

Free Mentoring Opportunities (5 February 2010)

Mentor groups will provide feedback to submitters in upcoming problems opening on these dates:

• PreAlgPoW, February 15
• FunPoW and AlgPoW, February 22

The Math Forum at AMTE conference (28-30 January 2010)

Claire Mead and Jason Silverman led a panel discussion at the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators conference in Irvine, California. The discussion, titled "Mathematics Teacher Development through Virtual Fieldwork", centered on our efforts to support pre-service teachers' learning through virtual fieldwork in the Math Forum's Online Mentoring Project. Pre-service teachers interact virtually with K-12 students and provide feedback on their submissions to our Problems of the Week. The panel included professors who use the OMP with their students at Plymouth (NH) State University, Mount St. Mary's College (Los Angeles), Western Oregon University, Indiana University, Northwest Missouri State University, and Rhode Island College.

 

Math Forum Online Workshop: Algebraic Reasoning (8 January 2010)

The Math Forum is offering a community-facilitated professional development workshop titled "Using Technology and Problem Solving to Build Algebraic Reasoning", starting January 28 and running through March 10.

This workshop is free. Participants who successfully complete the workshop will receive a $25 coupon to apply to the cost of any of our online courses. Those participants can also receive 1.5 CEUs for a fee of $25 to cover administrative costs.

Math Forum Online Professional Development Courses (1 January 2010)

The Math Forum has scheduled several six-week asynchronous courses to start in the first months of the year. Past participants describe the courses as highly effective and very worthwhile.

The Math Forum is leading a professional development program with the Colonial School District, New Castle, Delaware, this year. They are working with middle and high school teachers and focus on problem solving strategies and accountable talk in the math classroom.
