QUESTION: Once students are registered, what should they do next? When they submit, what exactly do they need to do?

Many teachers print and photocopy the problem and have students solve it on paper before going to the computer.

When they are ready to submit online:

  1. Go to http://mathforum.org. Click on Problems of the Week.
  2. Under Current Problems of the Week click on the service you want them to use (Math Fundamentals or Pre-Algebra or Algebra or Geometry). The page could be bookmarked to make future visits easier.
  3. Click on "Members: View the full problem, . . ."
  4. On the login screen students will type in their individual userID and password.
  5. On the full problem page click on the "Submit your answer" link.
  6. On the next page, they confirm their age, click on "I would like free mentoring, when it is available."
  7. In the "Answer" field they type the short version of their answer in a complete sentence.
  8. In the Explanation field they write a full explanation of how they arrived at the answer.
  9. Leave the text radio button on (not the html button).
  10. If you'd like to receive copies of everything, have them type your email address in the cc: field. This could also be a home address. [Note: You can also view their work using the View Work link in your Teacher Office.]
  11. There is a place to attach an image file if desired.
  12. Click on "Submit solution."

There are a few more screens to move through.

  1. It's good to click on the button to check our answer (the short form, not how to do it). There are hints there that help, whether our answers agree or not.
  2. The student may revise in the same session, if desired, and/or leave a comment.
  3. After any individual completes their process, it's best to quit the browser, which logs them out.
