Teaching Mathematics with the Problems of the Week (FunPoW Focus)


  This moderated course will be led by Claire Mead, FunPoW Coordinator. It will take place online using Blackboard Vista (formerly WebCT) and the Math Fundamentals Problem of the Week (FunPoW). The only technical requirements are a web browser and Internet access.

Who: Current subscribers of FunPoW or the Pre-Algebra Problem of the Week (PreAlgPoW) who want to implement problem solving more effectively. Users of the Algebra Problem of the Week (AlgPoW) and the Geometry Problem of the Week (GeoPoW) are also welcome, although the content will be at the Math Fundamentals level.

Participation requires membership at the Class level or higher. Non-members or Individual Teacher members may purchase the necessary access at a discounted rate.

When: Thursday, October 9 through Wednesday, November 19, 2008
Registration closes at 5 pm EST on Friday, October 3, 2008.
The course will span six weeks. Participants will have some flexibility within each week but are expected to complete the activities during the assigned week.

Credit: All individuals who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate indicating that they have completed 15 hours of professional development. This is equivalent to 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Cost:
  $149 - for current members at Class level or higher
  $174 - for non-members (course plus Class Membership access during the six week course)

In this course you will:

  • Enhance your understanding of NCTM's Process Standards and the role of PoWs in addressing them.
  • Develop concepts of mathematical problem solving and communication.
  • Learn to assess student work and provide effective feedback.
  • Expand your toolkit of strategies for managing problem solving in your classroom.
  • Participate in an ongoing community of teachers using PoWs.

Course activities will include:

  • Readings from NCTM's Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, websites, and journal articles (all available online)
  • Solving FunPoWs, submitting solutions online, analyzing the math
  • Having some of your students solve FunPoWs and submit solutions online
  • Sharing ideas and reflections with classmates through online journals and discussions
  • Live online chats via Blackboard Vista
