Brief Description: The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is a nonprofit professional association headquartered in Reston, Virginia. It is composed of more than 120,000 teachers, educators, and other professionals. It was founded in 1920 and now is the largest mathematics education organization in the world. Its purpose is to improve mathematics education for all students in the United States and Canada.
Stated purpose: The mission of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is to provide vision and leadership in improving the teaching and learning of mathematics so that every student is ensured an equitable Standards-based mathematics education and every teacher of mathematics is ensured the opportunity to grow professionally.
