Name: CoVis - Learning Through Collaborative Visualization General Information
Home Page URL: http://www.covis.nwu.edu/
Brief Description: The CoVis project in K-12 science education attempts to transform science learning to better resemble the authentic practice of science by enabling high school students to join with other students at remote locations in collaborative work groups and to communicate with university researchers and other scientific experts. Participating students study atmospheric and environmental sciences--including topics in meteorology and climatology--through project-based activities using state of the art scientific visualization software.
Stated purpose: Traditionally, K-12 science education has consisted of the teaching of well-established facts. This approach bears little or no resemblance to the question-centered, collaborative practice of real scientists. Through the use of advanced technologies, the CoVis Project is attempting to transform science learning to better resemble the authentic practice of science.
Sponsoring/Funding Institution: Led by a research team from the Learning Sciences program of the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. Other main participants are at University of Illinois, the Exploratorium, and Bellcore. Sponsors are NSF's program in Networking Infrastructures for Education and the Illinois State Board of Education/Eisenhower Program.
