Name: Alan Selby's Appetizers and Lessons for Math and Reason General Information
Home Page URL: http://whyslopes.com/
Brief Description: Three Skill For Algebra (a first image of mathematics after arithmetic - why letters or symbols are favored in algebra in place of numbers); Two logic puzzles to show the difference between a one-way and a two-way rule; Painless Theorem Proving; Longer Chains of Reason: What is Mathematical Induction?; Complex numbers Etc. - A geometrical story based on the addition and multiplication of arrows in the plane; Chains of Reason - math-free examples of rule-based reasoning; How Logic or Rule-Based Reason Appears in Math; VNR Concise Encyclopedia of Mathematics. Also Appetizers on Other WWW Pages.
Stated purpose: Welcome to an online math classroom. If one appetizer or lesson is not to your liking, try another. Each one is different. Each one offers a unique view of math or reason. The appetizers introducing reason or reasoning skills are wordy or math-free. I hope they will employed in courses where logic is discussed. The appetizers are from books, optional reading, described on my home page. Links to other web sites with material for both students and teachers appear below after the appetizers.
