Below the second challenge, our *FIRST* "for real" post. E-Mail coordinators, please make sure your teams have NTP's (Net Team Partners) and exchange information and disscuss *HOW TO* solve the challenges. Good Luck MrH *********************************** Level 4-6 *********************************** Mathematical Scavenger Hunt... You are invited on a great hunt--a mathematical hunt. Your weapons are your books, dictionary, etc. and of course your brains! Find the value of each below and use them to find the value of the formulas--along the way, please make sure to explain your thinking process because the best part of any hunt is when you tell HOW you made your catch! Find the value of each variable below and use it in the formulas that follow: A=the number of hours in 1 week B=the length of 1 inch in centimeters rounded to the nearest whole number C=the digit in the tens place of the number of days in 1 year D=the value of five less than nine E=the value of the roman numeral XVI F=the length of the side of a square whose perimeter is 20 meters G=the number of degrees in a right angle H=the number of holes in the average human head (hint: 2 of the holes are your two eyes!) I=the value which makes the statement true: ___ - 14 = 8 J=the answer to this math riddle: John and Fred went fishing. John caught twice as many fish as Fred. But if John gives 2 of his fish to Fred, they will have the same number of fish. Let your answer to J be the number of fish John and Fred have altogether. (A table may be useful). K=the next number if the sequence continues: 2, 5, 9, 14, 20, ____ L=the distance from the top of a capital "L" to the end of the base of the "L" if the L is 4 cm tall and 3 cm long on the base. Draw this and measure if you want to. Now use all of your answers to find the value of the formulas by replacing each letter with the value it represents. Do what is in the parentheses first. M = A - (B x C) N = E + F + G P = (D x H) + (I - J) Q = K - L R = M - N T = Q + R As a bonus, can you find the square root of the answer for T? Explain what a square root is? ******************************* Suggestion: When printing this file use a monospaced font such as Courier
