Description: Written for the Illinois State University College of Education course Principles of Curriculum Design, this student paper draws on the NCTM Standards, NEA Public Agenda studies, voices from Mathematically Correct, meta-analysis and other research into calculator use and paper and pencil arithmetic (PPA) in primary classrooms. Organized into theoretical underpinnings; a review of the literature which includes an online comparison of how a scientific calculator and a four-function calculator interpret order of operations; implications for the classroom; and bibliography.
