Elementary: Fractions, Decimals, Percents
In grades 3-5, students develop an understanding of fractions as
parts of unit wholes, parts of a collection, locations on the
number line, and as divisions of whole numbers. They learn to
recognize and generate equivalent forms of commonly used fractions,
decimals, and percents, study the kinds of information each
representation conveys, and gain facility in comparing fractions
by using benchmarks such as 1/2 or 1.
Problems that allow elementary students to practice using fractions,
decimals, and/or percents are listed below. They address the
NCTM
Number and Operations Standard for Grades 3-5 expectation that
students should develop and use strategies to estimate computations
involving fractions and decimals in situations relevant to students'
experience, and should use visual models, benchmarks, and equivalent
forms to add and subtract commonly used fractions and decimals.
