In grades 3-5, students learn to compute using basic number combinations and to solve related problems mentally, becoming fluent in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers. In so doing, they develop strategies for estimating the reasonableness of the results of computations that involve whole numbers, fractions and decimals. They learn when mental computation and estimation are appropriate, choosing their tools according to the context and nature of the computation. Elementary Problems of the Week that allow students to practice their estimating skills are found below. These problems address the NCTM Number and Operations Standard for Grades 3-5 expectation that students should be able to compute fluently and make reasonable estimates. To find sites about estimation on the Web, browse and search Estimation in our Internet Mathematics Library; to find elementary sites, go to the bottom of the page, set the searcher for late elementary level (3-5), and press the Search button. For questions about rounding numbers and place value, see the Elementary Level of the Ask Dr. Math archives: Place Value. Access to these problems requires a Membership. |
