Thanks to Arnold Neumaier, Bruce Reznik, Pedro Fortunay,
and Axel Vogt.

Arnold Neumaier mentioned Hazewinkel on formal groups.
Google immediately shows his list of publications, a
number of which say "... formal groups ..." in the title.
(I haven't looked at those papers yet.)

Bruce Reznik wrote on iterates of formal power series:

> I gave some talks on a special case under the
> title "What you have to do twice in order to Sin".

(The Catholic Church also addresses that topic when it
says being baptized twice is a sin.) That there are
square roots of the identity in the group I asked about
is something that I realized, but I wasn't sure about
more general nth roots.

Pedro Fortunay mentioned germs of diffeomorphisms.
He also mentioned Isao Nakai and Yoccoz. I find some
mentions of those authors on the web, but I haven't
yet figured out which of their writings are relevant.

Axel Vogt's comments may take some time to digest.
